Abstract

EIRIS, Ariel Alberto. El Independiente as a legal work by Pedro José Agrelo (1816-1817). Rev. hist. derecho [online]. 2022, n.63, pp.91-123. ISSN 1853-1784.

Pedro José Agrelo (1776-1846) was a lawyer of relevant activity in River Plate politics. When Agrelo was unable to integrate any government in 1816, he chose to write his own newspaper, El Independiente. It is considered that Agrelo tried through his writing to show himself as an experienced jurist and present his postulates to the government so that it would give him a place among those who debated the legal order to adopt. His project would be republican and of marked decentralization, which would have brought it closer to the federal positions as opposed to the Directory. To analyze the particularities of his project, El Independiente will be taken as the main source and crossed with other newspapers and letters that referred to the press of the moment. An analysis of the discourse will be carried out, to show the political languages used by Agrelo, the receptions of other contemporary models, and how his project discussed other lawyers' views.

Keywords : Pedro José Agrelo; El Independiente; Constitution; Congress of Tucumán; jurist.
