Jewels have become part of the history of mankind from the beginning of the world. Prehistoric man discovered different materials in their environment, transforming them in ornaments that also became symbols within their social group; also, at present, people still use these ornaments as an emblem, as distinctive or as a sign of power and hierarchy. Then the jewel is an object that carries with it more than a decorative function with a symbolic function, is full of meaning and conveys to others hundreds of meanings about its wearer. These meanings can be a tool for the designer, this might take the task to set up and coordinate the elements of the jewel to communicate but these meanings may be only the result of the interpretation of a social group. It may be that each part of the object means or only one of them is the one that communicates, could be the material which determines the meaning of the jewel? With this curiosity is that this research is undertaken and then arises to identify the concepts and meanings that people associate with the jewelry sold in the city of Buenos Aires today, in order to determine how each material used in the manufacturing a jewel influences the association of various meanings. To address this objective, a strong theoretical framework that goes through semiotics and communication theory and product flows into the history and significance of gem material. Later was continued fieldwork linking semantic differential technique with statistical correlation methods reaching qualitative analysis of two qualitative variables. The result was the verification of the hypothesis being that the substance can affect the meaning of the jewel by 35% regardless of the material and meaning, and that meaning can also be affected by other object drivers both formal aesthetic and functional.
