The paper presents the evidence resulting from current research at the Research Institute of Housing and Habitat, FAUD - National University of Córdoba, financed by CONICET, focusing on the study of urban growth processes that took place, during the last two decades, in the city of Cordoba. The analysis provides evidence of how the urban periphery, paradoxically, concentrates enclaves of very high income sectors and pockets of extreme poverty. This article is of particular interest as it addresses the problem of informal habitat and its relationship to urban sprawl. The description of present living conditions in a suburban slum is the starting point for proposing courses of action in the design of public housing policies aimed at mitigating conditions of segregation and facilitating access to a higher quality of life for the urban poor.
