Public interventions affecting urban space tend to be part of local political agendas that seek to create an attractive image of the city, within a framework of interurban competition. This article presents the results of an anthropological approach to two city-planning operations in two intermediate cities of France (Montpellier) and Colombia (Pereira), which transformed the urban spaces and favored the production of a promotional image of the city. It is argued that these city-planning actions conform to neoliberal ideological trends that ultimately affect the conception of urban space. The results show that, in spite of the existence of forms of government operating within similar ideological principles, in each city the transformed spaces reveal diverse modalities of construction of urban images each one revealing a particular version of modernity.
