Based on a cultural analysis of textual and visual sources (a corpus that comprises official records as well as caricature and fiction) this paper deals with daily mobility, as a social practice and relation, in early 20th century Buenos Aires. Understanding mobility spaces as social spaces, it historically reconstructs practices and representations of men and women as commuters. It explores travel experiences as well as relationships with «others»; this implies understanding mobility practices as meaningful experiences or ways of dwelling-in-motion and, therefore, as forms of daily sociability in large cities. Furthermore, it focuses on the way in which passengers’ behaviors tried to be shaped by discourses about «urba-nity» and/or «civility» as disciplinary practices or social self-control in bodily proximity.
