The residential urban add-on has been a planning tool used in the last thirty years for the enlargement of Spanish medium-sized cities. It has had a great impact on their change of scale, on the rebalancing of the existing city and in the generation of a recognizable residential fabric. Through the analysis of these projects, based on a significant sample of cases, one can identify a style to these extensions and their projectual character, understanding some of the challenges they imply and considering better alternatives... This new form of growth, based on a project of a high level urban quality and a recognizable urban image, also presents significant challenges, which should be evaluated in order to achieve a more efficient city for its inhabitants.
