Resumen

LOPES BRENNER, Eliane  y  PRIESTLEY, Gerda K. The development of rural tourism in Goias, Brazil: from the perspective of some european experiences. Estudios Socioterritoriales [online]. 2012, vol.11. ISSN 1853-4392.

Without doubt, tourism development in Brazil is not based on sustainable planning principles, for the social and environmental costs are high, while economic benefits are limited. Nevertheless, certain initiatives aimed at diversifying supply and products -including expansion inland- have made some contribution towards this end, including the incorporation of some well preserved natural areas into the process. Hence, although cultivation and animal farming are the main economic activities in the State of Goiás, the rural environment is no longer envisaged solely as the scenario for primary production, but also as the frame for tourism activities identified as an economic alternative. Some European rural tourism development experiences -especially in Spain, France and Portugal- stimulate the authors reflections on the possibilities for rural tourism development in Goiás, bearing in mind the constraints exercised by local social, environmental and economic conditioning factors.

Palabras clave : Rural tourism; Tourism planning; Sustainable development; Goiás/Brazil.
