In 2001, according to the Índice de Privación Material de los Hogares, poverty affected 59% of all homes in Tucumán. Almost half of these homes suffered deprivation related to both structural and circumstantial poverty. In this province, economic transformations imposed to the country during the last decades of the twentieth century deeply affected different sectors of the productive structure, creating a noticeable increase in employment problems (unemployment, sub-employment, informal employment). These processes had different development within the province's different administrative units, depending on the importance of the type of production or economic sector. Therefore, this paper analyzes the relationship among the characteristics of the economic process, employment problems and home-level poverty rates in the different departments of Tucumán.
