Abstract

BORELLO, José A. SMEs in Argentina: geography and government policies. Estudios Socioterritoriales [online]. 2012, vol.12. ISSN 1853-4392.

This paper presents and analyzes seven dimensions that help to understand the characteristics and dynamics of SMEs in Argentina, from a geographical perspective. Four of these dimensions relate to the structure of these businesses: age, legal form, establishment ownership (renter, owner, etc.) and connections with public and private institutions. Three dimensions describe certain aspects of their current situation: use of installed capacity, personnel structure, income and expenditure patterns. The data used were collected in 2007 from a sample of about 9000 industrial, commercial and service establishments located in all of the provinces of the country. The paper analyzes this information and presents a description of the geographic variation of SME activity in the country. In connection with this discussion some policy reflections are presented.

Keywords : SMEs; Characteristics of SMEs; SMEs policies.
