Abstract

RIERA, Constanza  and  BARRIONUEVO, Néstor. The difusion of mechanized irrigation in Córdoba (1997-2011). Estudios Socioterritoriales [online]. 2015, vol.18. ISSN 1853-4392.

Since 1990s, the diffusion of sprinkler irrigation with groundwater for field crops production meant a technological change in Cordoba. This work aims to identify, locate and quantify the area under irrigation in the province, using remote sensing methods, in order to gauge the scope of this productive transformation. Secondly, irrigated farming systems are described based on two case studies, one from each groundwater irrigation area of Córdoba, taking into account their ecological conditions and production traditions, so as to review the major territorial heterogeneities and recurrences. This comparison shows that irrigation technology is consistent with the productive system adopted as a result of the soyafication of regional agricultures, causing homogenization of the agricultural landscape.

Keywords : Sprinkler irrigation; Area under irrigation; Field crops agriculture; Córdoba.
