Abstract

KAMINKER, Sergio Andrés. The forgotten Puerto Madryn: the early stages of urban growth (1865-1970). Estudios Socioterritoriales [online]. 2019, vol.25. ISSN 1853-4392.

This article approaches the origin and structural characteristics of Puerto Madryn, prior to its demographic and urban outburst of 1970's through a qualitative reconstruction. The review of historical documents and in-depth interviews help to recompose the place of the port, the train, urban informality and the concentration of land property. We recover the ambiguity of nature in the history of a desert-like space of Central Patagonia and looks to comprehend social differentiation and distance between neighborhoods and groups in a town before it grew over seven thousand inhabitants.

Keywords : Patagonia; Urban growth; Train; Urban informality.
