The installation and consolidation of power structures in different historical societies comes about directly or indirectly; that is, through the use of force, or by encouraging apparently voluntary acceptance on behalf of the subjects. Classical societies are, therefore, generated and understood through their own historical representation. This does not mean outright invention, but a much more complex process involving manipulation and reinterpretation in the pursuit of different goals.
