Abstract

SALGADO, Ofelia Noemí. Argos [online]. 2009, vol.32, n.1, pp.85-109. ISSN 1853-6379.

A comparative study of literary works from the Renaissance and the Spanish Golden Century as against Classical texts widely known to the modern authors turns out to be of inestimable value for the understanding not only of those works, but of the history of the transmission of ancient texts in insufficiently documented periods. Such is the recreation by Cervantes of chapters and scenes taken from Petronius' Satyricon. Of particular interest is the reworking of the episode in Sat. 16-18.5, Quartilla's entrance at the inn where Encolpius and his friends stay, recreated by Cervantes in Quijote 1.36, the arrival of Luscinda and her masked companions at Juan Palomeque's inn.

Keywords : Transmission of Classical texts; Humanism; Petronius; Cervantes.
