Abstract

RISTORTO, Marcela. La introducción de nuevos cultos en Atenas: el himno a Hypnos en Filoctetes de Sófocles. Argos [online]. 2009, vol.32, n.2, pp.181-190. ISSN 1853-6379.

The purpose of the present article is to analyse the Hymn to Hypnos (827-832) in Sophocles' Philoctetes, regarded as a paean to Asclepius. We study in this hymn the nature of the praised goddess, who was joined to the official cult in the time of Philoctetes' performance. This fact can be related with the notion of "athenocentrism" of tragedy, that is to say tragedies which didn't take place in Athens have a aition, an explanation of origins of Athenian's custum or cult throught the myth. So in Philoctetes this hymn has the function of legitimate new cults introduced in Athens.

Keywords : Hymn; Paean; Cult; Asclepius; Sophocles.
