We offer an interpretation of the verses 1556-1578 of Sophocles’ play Oedipus at Colonus corresponding to the hymn to the nether gods sung by the chorus asking for Oedipus’ euthanasia. Four items are considered here: the structure of the hymn, the problematic identification of the deities involved, the final invocation of Thanatos as a symbolic representation of the hero’s death, and the eschatological ideas implied in the choice of the hymnic form for a funerary context.
