Throughout the Middle Ages, both Latin and Byzantine Christianity assumed Church and monarchy as related institutions. However, the Christians of Syria, Iraq and Iran view the relation between the Church and the Islamic monarchy in different terms. This paper has a double purpose. From the Methodological viewpoint, we will set aside the institutional approach to the Church and we will defineitas an Operationthat createssocial links. From the historical point of view we will analyze the case of Christians under the Islamic Caliphate in the Abbasid Period. This case will allow us to test our methodological approach.
