Resumen

COFRE, Ana R. et al. Olfactory and gustatory disfunction in COVID-19 patients from Argentina. Rev. argent. salud pública [online]. 2021, vol.13, suppl.1, pp.6-6. ISSN 1852-8724.

INTRODUCTION

: There is evidence proving damage to the smell and taste senses on COVID-19 patients. Significant differences in the endurance of these symptoms have been found in different populations. Based on the discoveries of other countries since April 2020, in Argentina, the description of a suspected COVID-19 case includes showing complete or partial smell or taste loss. This study aims to evaluate the proportion of COVID-19 patients in Argentina that present loss of smell or taste.

METHODS

: Multicenter study The subjects were positive COVID-19 cases, 18 years old and older, who had RT-PCR swabs performed in Argentine hospitals between May 15 and August 31,2020. Participants filled an online survey that included socio-demographic information, COVID-19 symptoms, comorbidities, and perception of loss of smell and taste.

RESULTS

: 214 COVID-19 patients took part in the study; 79% reported smell loss, and 54% taste loss. In 32% of participants the loss of smell was the first symptom. The percentage of men and women reporting smell loss and taste loss was similar. No significant difference was regarding the subjects' age.

DISCUSSION

: In the Argentine population, a high number of COVID-19 patients show smell and taste loss. It is crucial to develop an olfactory and gustatory test that can be adapted to the Argentine population. Such test must be able to be carried out at home. Our future projection is to develop the implementation of a massive disposable and digitalized test.
