Resumen

NEGRIN, Vanesa L  y  ZALBA, Sergio M. Description of the cypsela and the seedling of Grindelia ventanensis (Asteraceae), an endemic species with ornamental potential. Rev. Fac. Cienc. Agrar., Univ. Nac. Cuyo [online]. 2012, vol.44, n.1, pp.13-25. ISSN 1853-8665.

We describe the cypsela and, for the first time, the seedling of Grindelia ventanensis, a shrub with ornamental potential endemic from the Southern Hills from the Buenos Aires province. We present the chronology of flowering and seed production and the relationship between the size of the cypselas and the development of young plants regarding the origin of the propagules, from cultivation or wild populations. Cultivated populations flowered and produced seeds earlier. Cypselas from cultivated populations were smaller and seedlings originated from them showed higher mortality. Seedlings originated from the cypselas collected in wild populations produced their first true leaf between the 7th and 21st day and exhibited a survivorship exceeding 70% at the age of 35 days. The smaller size of the cypselas from cultivated plants could be related to growth conditions or to a founder effect. The higher survivorship of the plants germinated from bigger cypselas could be a key factor for selecting a stock for cultivation.
