This paper describes the functions and utilities of the implementation of author profiles in institutional repositories, as a value-added service aimed at increasing its use among members of an institution and improving the visibility of the scientific production housed in the repository. This includes a survey of author profile services implemented in Argentinian and foreign institutional repositories. It notes that, in view of the establishment of national depository terms, the need for strong and sustainable institutional repertories over time is even greater than before. The integration of the functionalities of curricular systems and of management of scientific and technological information into the repositories is a way to achieve this strength, and author profiles are the visible results of this integration. This points out that for an author the benefit of having a public profile in the repository of the institution is equivalent to the benefit of having a digital repository of the institution in terms of competitive advantage, added value, increased visibility and the ease of recovery and access to the production in existence
