This search is an excerpt about a completed master's research have as an objective to understand civilizing character of the school from an important element, the time, observed from the theories Norbert Elias. This article analyses of literature and literary search "Menino de engenho" by José Lins do Rego and "Infância" by Graciliano Ramos. The study shows the perceptions of childhood and children's schooling in the mid-nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this period in literary essays understands the "school time" as an element standardization of rules, enforcement of orders and civilization proposal for children in certain social groups.
