This paper aims to analyze the role of the Catholic Church in Argentina in the construction of the educational system since the return to democracy in 1983. Specifically, we analyze the Catholic Church-State relations and their discursive and political positionings on education, starting form a reading of a set of discursive productions in the period 1983-2013. Following the State's role and the place for religion in education, we identify three moments of the Catholic Church’s role in the national education system: a first moment of antagonism (1983-1989), a second moment of complementarity (1989-2002) and a third moment of discursive autonomy (2002-2013). Briefly, we highlight the links between Church and State actors for the definition and governance of the educational system, as well as the reconfigurations of the educational system, laicity and public sphere in contemporary Argentina.
