This article readdresses the results of an investigation carried out in 2014, which analyzed the construction of the professional identity among teachers in rural single-teacher schools in Peru. Emphasizing the affective dimension, the article analyzes the emotional work held by rural teachers to face the hard-working conditions in this type of schools (geographical isolation, separation from their nuclear family for long periods), as well as their coping strategies regarding said circumstances. The article argues that the teachers’ emotional experience is mediated by the feeling of loneliness and separation from their families which affects women more than men. Given this situation, the discourse concerning their vocation stands as a way of giving meaning to their work at school and allows them to differentiate themselves from their peers in non-single-teacher and urban schools.
