The article constitutes a first attempt of interpretation on the historical evolution of the field of production of knowledge in education in Argentina. The work proposes, on the one hand, a panoramic introduction to the basic socio-historical conditions for the emergence, configuration and expansion of this field. On the other hand, it features the agents, institutions and dynamics that, in the long term, structured these practices. In this way, it introduces a preliminary periodization of the evolution and constitution of the field which takes into account the action of the State, the expansion of the system of statefunded instruction and the role that the universities assumed in this process. The work asserts that, in contrast to other fields of knowledge where the processes of constitution are almost exclusively related to their institutionalization in the sphere of universities as scientific-academic knowledges, the field of production of knowledge in education has two roots of constitution: the statebureaucratic field and the university.
