The Campos Teacher´s School (ENC) had occupied itself with the formation of elementary school teachers in the North of Rio de Janeiro State (ERJ) for almost sixty years (1895-1954). Our article analyses its origins in the beginning of the republican period from a double point of view: in observing both the interior of the institution and its relation to the external context. The interior view focus on the school culture (Julia, 2000), analysing the curriculum, the temporal and space distribution, and the school's material conditions as well. In this sense, the origins of the institution had been filled by the powerful presence of the republican values and hygienistic concepts, throughout a long term program but with not necessary class attendance. In its relationship to the exterior, the article studies the conjugation of the intellectual and the political forces that made possible its creation in the educational context of the end of the XIX century, among the professionalizing process of the school teaching and the implantation of public instruction system, both of them marked by a process of forward and backward movements full of ambiguities. In the other hand, the women's slow entry into the working world put in evidence a possible model of female education, rather than a professionalizing project of teachers formation.
