Our purpose is to discuss the potentialities of the studies on material culture to the perception of the social appropriation and to the apprehension of the material dimension of school life. The paper is structured around three axes: school industry and school as market; remnants of materiality, and sensory history of school and of schooling. Taking the school culture in the perspective of a sensory history of the school and of schooling requires bringing to light the individual and collectives experiences of constitution of subjectivities, perceptive schemes, preferences, corporeality, memories and affections. The agency of the various social groups, and the imperatives of the commerce and industry are not overlooked, and neither is the intentionality of the State. To these are joined the multiple forms of the appropriation of such materiality, the memorization of the past, and the construction of affective bonds between the subject and the physical world.
