This paper aims to historicize two moments of the trajectory of Brazilian education in the implementation of the extended school day was designed as part of public policies nationwide. By means of a desk study and bibliographic our object is within the field of history of education. The study calls into question how these proposals understood the organization of school time, which elements composed propositions enlargement length of stay for children in public schools, the meanings embedded in the time watching their fields covered. Through educational policies aimed at developing actions for construction of a public school full-time in the second half of the first decade of this century, this type of organization for basic education has become a subject of discussion among educators involved in this process. Accordingly, through this study we bring historical elements to think about the public school full time.
