Abstract

DA SILVA, Fernando Candia. La escuela misional entre los mapuche : ensayos para una «escuela indígena» en la Araucanía (1896 - 1924). Hist. educ. anu. [online]. 2017, vol.18, n.2, pp.1-10. ISSN 2313-9277.

This article addresses the installation, expansion and behavior of the Bavarian capuchins mi ssionary school in the Araucanía region between their arrival (1896) and the renounce of their first Apostolical Prefect, Burcardo de Röttingen (1924). By the analysis of official sources (monthly bulletins) and missionary documents (chronicles and publica tions), the article explains how the missionary school was designed and implemented as an «indigenous - oriented» school through an effective location near mapuche reductions and integration devices like bilingual policies. While this school had assimilation ist goals by its alignment with the Chilean state ideas of civilization, it was also very different from the public schools in its approach to the mapuche children and families, attracting part of the indigenous demand that those schools neglected, and inc luding pedagogical notions dismissed by public authorities, like the functional use of the mapuche language or mapudungún .

Keywords : Missional school, indigenous school, capuchins, mapuche, Araucanía..
