Although early childhood education and its teachers have received increasing attentionfrom the education field, there are still few empirical studies focused on this educational level in general, and on teacher education in particular. This article aimsto contribute to the reconstructionof thehistorical series aroundpre-service early childhood teacher educationin Argentina between 1886 and 1997. The research examines the teacher’s professional profile as constructed bythecurriculumplans approved during the whole period. Our review challenges some of the commonly accepted assumptions in the teacher educationfield and points towards new directions for future research. Among its main findings, the study suggests a process of progressive deprofessionalisationof teacher education programmesforearly childhood education in Argentina throughout the 111 years studied.
