Abstract
GATTI RICCARDI, Giuseppe. Observation as a Social Cartography in El peso de la noche, from. Jorge Edwards. CELEHIS [online]. 2014, n.27, pp.9-29. ISSN 2313-9463.
The present study analyzes the novel El peso de la noche, from the Chilean writer Jorge Edwards, with the aim to examine the way that certain social codes and some manifestations of the nature, on having interacted, influence the perception of the otherness and define his modalities. Our approach proposes an approximation to these dynamics of recognition or denial of "the Other one" and studies the processes of observation between human beings from Maurice Merleau-Ponty's theoretical lines. The analysis centers, also, in the urban scene of this interaction: the city of Santiago of Chile -unavoidable landscape of Edwards's narrative- an area historical and strongly split from the geographical, social, economic and cultural point of view, organized according to a middle age class system.
Keywords : Jorge Edwards; Chilean narrative of the 20th century; perception of the otherness; class division society.
