Abstract

This paper focuses on Moi, Tituba ... sorcière noire de Salem by the Guadeloupean writer Maryse Condé. The purpose is to examine the text as alternative version of other texts written by men, whether historians or established writers, such as Arthur Miller, whose dramatic work The Crucible shows Tituba in minimal appearances, without knowing her origin or destination. Also, Condé's novel introduces a significant change in the history of another text devoted to American literature. We refer to The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose main character reappears in Conde's novel to take a position diametrically opposed to the one in the hypotext. This allows us to read Moi, Tituba in the light of debates that occupied the feminists from the 1970s.
