Abstract

WEINBERG, Liliana. The book of an exile. CELEHIS [online]. 2015, n.29, pp.52-70. ISSN 2313-9463.

Thirty years after the frst edition of Ángel Rama's La ciudad letrada (Hanover, Ediciones del Norte, 1984), published posthumously after the disappearance of its author, we pay tribute to this essay, which became a fundamental point of articulation between Latin American critical studies and cultural and postcolonial studies developed by the North American academy. It is possible to study both the analysis generated by Rama's text as well as the essay in its entirety, and it is also interesting to follow many of the reinterpretations or even the "interpretative families" that have been formulated from the idea of a "city of letters". It is argued that Rama's idea constitutes a fundamental "node" in which several critical traditions converge and are rearticulated, while at the same time new nets irradiate from it at a key point for the consolidation of cultural and postcolonial studies, making it possible to follow Rama's itinerary and the incorporation, application, and critical positioning of the "city of letters" category by both Latin and North American scholars.

Keywords : Rama, Ángel; City of Letters; Latin-American literature Latin-American literary criticism.
