HERZOVICH, Guido. El intelectual en el kiosco de revistas: Ciudad (1955-56). CELEHIS [online]. 2017, n.33, pp.25-36. ISSN 2313-9463.

The magazine Ciudad (1955-56), published by an eclectic group of young intellectuals with a shared desire to make a difference in Argentine society, aimed to be both a platform and a space to "diagnose" areas of potential intervention. This group's pragmatic approach allowed for epistemological possibilities which Sur's moral superiority and Contorno's voluntarism in some ways precluded. As such, Ciudad offers new insights into the critical imagination of a decade which is traditionally described by reference to these latter two publications. The intellectual envisaged in Ciudad's pages does not expect the State to be a space which gives voice to her interests, nor the educational system to be a panacea for cultural woes; she is therefore compelled to look to popular reading practices in the context of mass culture, and at the expansion and increasing heterogeneity of newsstands. These sites of inquiry, ethnographic in nature, also represent the most "public" spaces in which Ciudad's imagined intellectual could intervene in the context of Juan Perón's populist presidency.
