Abstract

RAMIREZ, Adelmar. Traumatic memory as structural element in La ciudad ausente by Ricardo Piglia. CELEHIS [online]. 2018, n.35, pp.1-5. ISSN 2313-9463.

This paper presents a critical study of the manifestation of traumatic memory in La ciudad ausente by Ricardo Piglia, arguing that traumas caused by state-sponsored terrorism in Argentina, are displayed in the novel through implicit messages and allegories. In this sense, Piglia's theses on the short-story are interweaved with psychological postulates on the gaps found in testimonies from survivors of extreme experiences. Missing information is accompanied by a detective-type of narrator who identifies himself with the stories he recollects from the machine. That is the starting point, the main character's loss of his nuclear family. His loss is presented as a scale model of the country's.

Keywords : Trauma; Secret; Testimony; Allegories; Dictatorship.
