Abstract

PEREZ, Ezequiel. Territories of discourse. Representations of the Kingdom of Chile in Pedro de Valdivia and Jerónimo de Vivar (1545-1558). CELEHIS [online]. 2018, n.35, pp.1-5. ISSN 2313-9463.

Valdivia´s letters are a valuable testimony of the first years of the conquest of Chile (1540-1553). The territory is represented from a political position which shows the relations between the subject and the space. At the same time, we can verify obvious relations with the first chronicler written in the region, belonging to Jerónimo de Vivar and dated five years after Valdivia´s death (1558).  In both documents we find coincidences and variations in the way of representing the territory, describing the Indians or how to present their political positions. In this article we will try to give an account of those guidelines that characterize the territorial representation of both authors in order to systematize a discourse that not only describes the territory but also tries to influence the decisions of the authority with the purpose to perform the political reality.

Keywords : Chile; Conquest; Territory; Pedro de Valdivia; Jerónimo de Vivar.
