Abstract

RIELLA, Alberto  and  MASCHERONI, Paola. Desigualdades sociales y territorios rurales en Uruguay. Pampa [online]. 2011, n.7, suppl.1, pp.39-63. ISSN 2314-0208.

This article introduces the problem of social inequalities at rural areas in Uruguay related to its regions. It was made a spatial analysis of structural inequalities, understood as those arisen from ownership and use of the land. Those inequalities generate a number of dynamic inequalities which are expressed in levels of poverty, access to employment opportunities and education and health coverage. Those are factors that build social structure of each of the rural areas by establishing limits and opportunities for development. There has been made six types of regional inequalities that show how rural areas with low concentration of the land and high intensity of its use have lower inequality than territories with high concentration and low or very low intensity of use. This analysis shows that despite the present economic growth and agricultural sector expansion, land use and ownership are still structural agents of social inequalities in the territories.

Keywords : Social inequalities; Territory; Rural development.
