Abstract

This article discusses some of the characteristics of family farming in Uruguay framed contemporary process of dispute for the physical and symbolic appropriation of the territory. The research used as case analysis to family farmers in the region east of Uruguay, specifically the department of Rocha. This is a traditional area of agricultural development, gathered throughout the twentieth century based on a social structure of family farming coexisting with some great capitals of extensive livestock farming and rice. In recent decades, the influences of the processes of globalization and the deepening of capitalist structures in the countryside in Uruguay, has expanded into this area a number of economic activities such as tourism, forestry and extensive agriculture that have changing existing balances, with significant social and economic tensions completely reconfigure the space and society.
