This paper aims to detect the presence and the memory of San Martín in Mendoza and in the Confederacy. After a brief review of the work of early biographers and writers, the points of contact or differences between memory and history are discussed. Through documents of various kinds it is shown that both the national and international opinion held San Martín in high regard, even before his death and even more so after that date. Thus, it is concluded that San Martín was not an unknown or forgotten character before Mitre wrote his famous Historia de San Martín y de la emancipación sud-americana, that San Martín was remembered for being a true hero, which was perceived by many of his own contemporaries who witnessed to that.
