This article focuses on the attempts made by the council of Buenos Aires in the last decades of the colonial period to ensure the living conditions of prisoners who were secluded in the dungeons, while monitoring the progress of its processes court. We will analyze in detail the performance of the Defensor de pobres, member of the council annually elected to perform the tasks mentioned. Our objective is to visualize the most frequent interventions of this auxiliary justice and ponder how their actions solved or eased the most frequent needs suffered by the prisoners.
