This article aimed to analise the representations of teachers graduated from the course of Study of Escola de Educação Física e Desportos (EEFD) of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in the 1970s about their initial reasons for choosing the course. Interviews were carried out with four students of the EEFD based on a semi-structured script. Among the factors listed to justify their desire to enroll in the course, it stands out the presence of a professional example that marked the school life of respondents and their interest in sports since childhood. Other relevant data was the lack of reference to their interest in exercising the teaching profession. Moreover, the idea that it was a college to practitioners of physical practice and/or (ex-) athletes was yet current in the 1970s. At last, it is important to highlight the social position and economic possibilities of each subject as a fundamental item for the construction of representations about the area. Although the representation of the area is not a distinctive factor in the relation among the various college courses, this representation differed according to the possibilities and ambitions of the subjects and were put before their socioeconomic conditions.
