The limit between before and after Peronism in Jujuy is eloquent when looking at labor in the sugar industry. Like other workers throughout the country, workers in the sector were receptive to the preaching of Perón and sensitive to the impact of rising wages, labor laws and political and social recognition. The set of social benefits and, in a particular way, the maintenance of wage levels achieved during the boom years, were vehemently defended by the union whose mobilization was almost permanent. The years 1948-1949, characterized by the new post-war international scene, represented a turning point that marked the reorientation of the Peronist government's economic strategy, which finally had repercussions on the system of state subsidies to the sugar industry and tangible effects to the real economy of its workers, who saw the purchasing power of their salaries deteriorate more sharply than in other sectors. With the aim of contributing to the field of regional studies focused on the world of labor at the time of the first Peronism, examining sources that make possible a more complex view of the worker's experience, we attempt an approach to the material and symbolic impact of the crisis on the conditions of life recently conquered by the workers of the sugar mills of Jujuy, who in October of 1949 staged one of the most important strikes in the sector.
