HERRERA, Clara E.. Compliments and petition to Mary from the neogranadine Francisca J. de Castillo y Guevara (1671-1742). Travesía (San Miguel de Tucumán) [online]. 2019, vol.21, n.2, pp.37-61. ISSN 2314-2707.
Francisca Josefa de Castillo is more celebrated for her woks in prose than for her poetry; among other works she wrote Su Vida, Afectos espirituales and other short texts in prose. Given the place the Virgin occupies in colonial religiosity, it is no surprise that among her poems there is one dedicated to the celestial mother: "Elogios y súplicas a María Santísima". Though, on a first reading, it seems just a charming laudatory poem to the Virgin, a historical examination of the devotion to Mary allows us to perceive the most important themes debated in this tradition. Castillo unfolds her knowledge and argues about the veneration of the Virigin. Though allusion to Mary are found in all her writings, I will only consider two of these texts for this essay: the poem"Elogios y súplicas a María Santísima" and Su Vida. Our aim is to revise the theological approach of Castillo on the doctrine of Mary and to analyze how her narrative epitomizes the contents of the poem.
