Abstract

FERNANDEZ, Romina  and  ALBORNOZ, Patricia. Foliar anatomy of four halophiles species of the northwestern Argentina. Lilloa [online]. 2019, vol.56, n.1, pp.14-23. ISSN 0075-9481.  http://dx.doi.org/10.30550/j.lil/2019.56.1/2.

The leaves of the halophites plants develop strategies to confront adverse conditions of the saline environments. The objective of this work was to characterize the foliar anatomy of Atriplex argentina, Alternanthera nodifera, Ehretia cortesía y Trianthema argentina, halophytes from northwestern Argentina. The material was collected in the Salinas Grandes (Catamarca Province ) and Aimogasta (La Rioja Province). Conventional histological techniques were applied. E. cortesia, A. argentina and T. argentina presented glandular trichomes and A. nodifera eglandular. The stomata of E. cortesia and A. nodifera were found sunken. Isolateral mesophyll was observed in E. cortesia and mesophyll with Kranz structure was observed in A. argentina, A. nodifera and T. argentina. A. argentina, A. nodifera and E. cortesia presented acuiferous parenchyma. All species showed abundant and diverse types of calcium oxalate crystals in mesophyll and in case of E. cortesia also presented calcium carbonate crystals in salt glands. The work describes for the first time the foliar anatomy of these species and contributes to the knowledge of the anatomical adaptations of halophilic vegetation from northwestern Argentina.
