Resumen

ALMEIDA, Marta. Pending issues: the french and german Left against the Argentina 78 World Soccer Championship. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2013, vol.43, n.1, pp.21-36. ISSN 2362-2024.

The boycott against the 1978 Argentine World Cup, held during the last military dictatorship (1976-1983), began in 1977. That year, the French Le Monde newspaper published the first allegations against the World Soccer Championship. For the first time the word boycott was used to name the first public repudiation directed at the Argentine World Cup that took place in June 1978. The creation of Boycott Committee to the World Cup in Argentina (COBA) in France was an immediate reaction to the news coming from Argentina. The 70s was still a time of political unrest after May 1968, when leftist movements showed interest in different kind of social issues in Africa and Latin America, such as antinuclear and feminist ideas, sexual freedom and peace. An analysis of the political posters made by leftist movements reveals how French and German activists reacted to the Argentine dictatorship showing their historical repudiation against Nazism and Fascism.
