Resumen

ROLLA, Florencia. The "british" suburb in Buenos Aires: The material and cultural construction of Flores neighbourhood (1860-1887). An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2017, vol.47, n.1, pp.99-110. ISSN 2362-2024.

The development of the suburbs in the surroundings of Buenos Aires, between the decades of 1860 and 1880, has generally been approached from the perspective of the Buenos Aires elites, as leisure spaces and temporary residences. The presence of roads and later of the railway was decisive in communicating the city with the suburbs. The British community, though low in population, played a crucial role when delineating materially and culturally many of the characteristics of the suburbs. It is suggested that from their practices and representations, they could materialize the idea of progress related to the natural landscape. This paper seeks to explain this construction from the case study of Flores neighborhood.

Palabras clave : Buenos Aires; 19th Century; suburb; British community.
