Abstract

BASILE, Silvana D.. Reflections in the framework of the earthen architectural heritage: protection, conservation and restoration of the modest heritage. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2018, vol.48, n.1, pp.15-30. ISSN 2362-2024.

This paper is intended to reflect on the concepts of conservation and restoration applied to the earthen architectural heritage as a whole -goods of great typological diversity, which are an expression of the culture of people- to contribute to the debate on the protection. The richness of this architectural heritage lies in itself, or in a building tradition that uses a universal material no longer considered as "raw material" but as an important cultural documentation of a know-how which allows the elaboration of a wide variety of technical and constructive solutions. An heritage that is revalorising, but it is still exposed to great risks due to inadequate interventions. Since they became aware of the importance of this architectural expression, the studies have focused on the sociological implications and on the building technical aspect, but they have ignored the overall view of the problem which lies in assessing how to properly protect these settlements.

Keywords : earthen architecture; preservation; conservation; restoration; modest heritage.
