Abstract

COMPTE GUERRERO, Florencio. Francesco Maccaferri. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2019, vol.49, n.1, pp.95-109. ISSN 2362-2024.

In October 1896, Guayaquil was practically destroyed by a great fire that left more than a third of its population homeless. With the profits of the second cocoa boom, the city started a reconstruction process that allowed the consideration of a new architecture, according to the progress of modernity. Firstly, this happened with the incorporation of the academicist principles, brought by Italian technicians. Secondly, due to the deepening of 1920's crisis with the development of a more austere and simple architecture related to Modern Movement. The most important architect of this period was Francesco Maccaferri, considered a pioneer in the development of modern architecture in the country, with a fundamental role in shaping the disciplinary field of Ecuadorian architecture.

Keywords : Francesco Maccaferri; Italian architects; modern architecture.
