Abstract

DE GIORGI, Alessandro. Punishment and Political Economy. Delito soc. [online]. 2016, vol.25, n.41, pp.9-36. ISSN 0328-0101.

This article proposes a revision of the perspective of the political economy of punishment. From a detailed look at various authors, both classic and contemporary, it promotes some of the limits of this analytical perspective, and, at the same time, different contributions to overcome them. In this sense, the article provides some guidelines for the construction of a post-reductionist political economy of punishment, which can establish relationships between economic and symbolic dimension of punishment, the broader governmental effects generated by penal strategies and the specific politico-institutional arrangements through which the relations between punishment and social structure are mediated. Finally, emphasizes the possibility that the neo-Marxist criminology can approach the penal politics as a set of material and symbolic practices that contribute to the overall reproduction of capitalist social formations and of their specifical regimes of accumulation.

Keywords : Post-reductionist political economy of punishment; Less eligibility; Regime of accumulation; Symbolic dimension of punishment.
