Abstract

LIO, Vanesa  and  URTASUN, Martín. Staring back: Questions and reading keys for researching video surveillance. Delito soc. [online]. 2016, vol.25, n.41, pp.37-58. ISSN 0328-0101.

While it is a phenomenon in expansion in major urban cities all over the country, state video surveillance of public spaces has not yet generated a body of local studies from social sciences. This paper aims to make a contribution to overcome this situation. On one hand, we present reading keys to navigate international debates on the phenomenon of video surveillance. On the other hand, we revisit some reflections from our ongoing researches on video surveillance municipal bodies in the Province of Buenos Aires. Paradoxically, the bodies responsible for watching the cities often put up strong defenses against external watch, trying to control circulating discourses and critics on their work. In this sense, each research requires an exercise of reflectivity, which implies an epistemological monitoring on the own work but also provides new strategies to understand the phenomenon.

Keywords : Video surveillance; Prevention; Security; Reflexivity; CCTV.
