This paper aims to describe the work activ- ities that people develop during their deten- tion in federal prisons, analyzing their effects for the precarious persistence of a negotiated internal order. Prison work, far from an  autonomous social practice, can be considered  a  strate- gic edge of the penitentiary system, which together with other highly relevant practices allow understanding  the  constitution of  an internal order in the prison, extremely precar- ious and coercively negotiated. For this rea- son, this article also intends to contribute to the explanation of the aims pursued through prison work, according to the representa- tions of inmates and prison officers in fed- eral prisons in Argentina. From the quanti- tative and qualitative alterations observed in recent years, it is proposed to also explore the effects that prison work may be causing in the management of internal order
