Trade union institutionalization has introduced crucial problems to Marxist social theory so a reconceptualization from this perspective is required. This paper looks to make a contribution in the context of a renewal of the rank and file versus bureaucracy debate in UK. The core of the paper shows several concepts for a critical theory (class formation, collective action, capitalist state, hegemony). The main hypothesis is that the "trade union bureaucracy" is a moment of class formation, as class collective action, grounded in capitalist hegemony system as class struggle.
